HOW TO MAKE A STONE CLADDING ON PLASTERBOARD

Here are easy step-by-step instructions for creating a fake stone wall on a plasterboard surface by applying stone on stone.

Preparation:

• Remove, with a brush or with a damp cloth, as much dust as possible from the plasterboard;

• Outline on a sheet of paper and then transfer roughly on the wall with a construction pencil, helping yourself with the measurements with a professional tape measure, a positioning scheme of the stones by calculating dimensions and centimeters well, in order to avoid laying errors. N.B: plan to create a track that leads the electric wires to the top of the wall;

• Wear protective gloves to prevent the fixative or glue from damaging the skin and a mask with filter so as not to breathe directly into the smells of the products;

First phase:

• Apply the appropriate fixative with a short-haired microfibre roller on the plasterboard to obtain a better grip of the leveling compound;

• Wait for the fixative to dry and spread it evenly with a notched trowel, checking with a bubble level the linearity of the wall, the skim coat;

• Drown in the freshly applied smoothing layer a 0.4x0.4 cm mesh fiberglass mesh. The mesh will provide the entire wall with a solid structure and act as a reinforcement "reinforcement";

Second phase:

• Spread homogeneously over the fiberglass mesh, checking the linearity of the wall with a level bubble, the elastic and water-repellent adhesive suitable for the application of the stones on plasterboard with a notched trowel (NB: it is necessary that the glue knows how to resist the "natural" micro-movements that a plasterboard wall can undergo over time especially due to thermal changes);

• Start by applying the adhesive from the first meter downwards, continuing upwards;

• Position the stones one at a time making sure that they do not move and leaving a gap between them (which will then be covered with putty);

• Repeat the same operation on the whole surface to be covered;

• Leave everything to dry for as long as necessary;

Third phase:

• Prepare the stucco in such a way that it appears in a solid enough format to be handled, or to buy ready-made paste putty in the specialized shops;

• Wear latex gloves;

• Take the first piece of putty and lay it on the joint;

• Press gently until the entire gap is covered between one stone and another;

• Repeat the operation on all the wall joints. N.B: the secret to a good result is not to be in a hurry and pay attention in positioning the grout so that it is well attached to the wall and that it does not cover the stones;

• Allow everything to dry and air the room for the necessary time;

Fourth phase:

• Now that the surface is dry, we apply a finishing coat. You can choose between a matte finish and a glossy finish according to your taste;

CAUTION:

Covering a plasterboard wall with stones is not difficult but you have to pay attention to some details:

• Preferably use the plasterboard with the green colored sheet as it is designed to be applied in damp environments such as bathrooms or kitchens;

• Check the weight of the stones as the plasterboard sheet over the years may weaken or undergo deformations caused by too much load;

• Plan to create a track that brings the electric wires to the upper part of the wall because after completing the coating it will no longer be possible;

• Make sure that the stones are stable and do not move. To be sure, it is recommended to use special adhesives, in paste, more expensive than the powder adhesives but much faster and easier to apply with a common notched trowel;

• Pay attention every 5/6 stones to their positioning and do not wait for the adhesive to solidify because then it will no longer be possible to make changes to the wall.
