Tile adhesive on plasterboard

Given that each application surface of the tiles requires the use of its specific adhesive, let's now see how to apply an adhesive on plasterboard.

Plasterboard preparation

In general, the laying surface must be solid, compact, dry and free of cracks or differences in height.

In particular, for gypsum-based substrates one must be sure to work on slabs that are dry and pre-treated with a special "Primer".

Before that, everything must necessarily be cleaned from traces of dust, plaster or dirt in general.

Any cracks on the slabs must be fixed with a special sealant.

Preparation of the glue

Generally tile adhesives are prepared by mixing 1 liter of water for every 3.5 kg of product.

To mix this mix you can use a professional mixer or more simply a low speed drill.

The result that will be sought will be a plastic and homogeneous mixture.

When the dough appears as described above, leave it to rest for 10 minutes and then mix again.

What has been obtained can be used up to a maximum of 6 hours.

How to use and apply it

• Lay corrugated cardboard and cover sheets on the ground to protect the flooring;

• Wear protective gloves and a professional P1 type mask;

• Apply a first layer of adhesive on the support with the smooth part of the spatula. N.B: always respect the correct adhesive thicknesses required according to the work being carried out;

• Spread the adhesive with the toothed part of the spatula;

• Position the tiles making them adhere well. If necessary, tap lightly on the tile to ensure its correct "grip".

• Follow the tile assembly scheme indicated in the article on this site "TILES GUIDE ON PLASTERBOARD";

• If the adhesive tends to form a sort of surface film, do not absolutely wet the adhesive with water. Proceed with a new spreading of another layer always troweling with the notched part of the trowel;

• Check the positioning of the tiles and make corrections within 30 minutes of laying, before the adhesive takes effect;

• At the end of the work, clean any traces of glue on the tiles.

CAUTION:

Here are some useful tips to avoid making mistakes when laying and to obtain the best possible result:

• If the tiles to be laid are large or subjected to particular mechanical stresses, it will be necessary to apply the adhesive (approximately 2 mm thick) also on the back of the tiles to guarantee a "double seal".

• Preferably use the plasterboard with the green colored sheet as it is designed to be applied in damp environments such as bathrooms or kitchens.

• Check the weight of the tiles, as the sheet of plasterboard over the years may weaken or undergo deformations caused by too much load.

• Check that the glue, in addition to being elastic, is also resistant to humidity and water, in fact usually a tiled wall is made in a bathroom or more generally in damp environments.

• Pay attention every 5/6 tiles to their positioning and do not wait for the adhesive to solidify because then it will no longer be possible to make changes to the wall.
