How to fix the holes on the plasterboard

The plasterboard is now the material of excellence in the building world and it is always easier to find, inside the houses, plasterboard walls.

It may happen that the plasterboard is accidentally damaged and repairs must be made.

Let's see how.

Assessment of damage and repair in 8 steps:

If the hole is large, we will need a plasterboard slab (of the same nature as the one on the wall) and metal uprights (or alternatively wooden slats) to be positioned possibly inside the hole.

We will then proceed by placing a new piece of plasterboard cut "to measure" to cover the damaged area and we will of course stucco to finish the whole.

• place a 4x4 cloth or a piece of felt cloth on the ground to protect the floor from dust and debris;

• cut a piece of plasterboard just larger than the damaged area, place it on the wall and with a construction pencil trace the shape of the hole we are going to make;

• cut the slab section with a professional plasterboard saw;

• cut pieces of metal profile for plasterboard structures or alternatively two strips of wood about 6 centimeters wide and fix them inside the hole on the wall with self-drilling phosphate screws 3.5x25, leaving these strips of metal or wood go through the whole hole;

• Place the previously made piece of plasterboard in the hole and screw it onto the visible part of the metal profile pieces for plasterboard structures or the two wooden strips.

Note: if the piece of plasterboard does not flow smoothly inside the hole, file the parts in question with a plasterboard saw or a professional planer.

• Now put the filler on the joints and fill the whole part with a professional spatula.

Note: let the filler dry and repeat the operation until you get a perfect shave;

• then sand the area with a manual grinder until the surface is smooth and uniform;

• whitewash with a special plasterboard paint and an interior roller.

Suggestions from Tuttocartongesso

• When applying the grout, it will be necessary to rinse the spatula between one coat and another because a dirty spatula can ruin the work;

• The filler can also be cleaned with a damp cloth. The result obtained is sufficiently acceptable. No dust is created and it is much simpler. NB: do not wipe the wet cloth too often on the same point or do not press with force, otherwise the wall may be damaged;

• Wearing a mask is the basis of any DIY job. Inhaling too much chalk dust or paint and primer is not very healthy;

• Pay attention to the use of the spatula during grouting. Prevent the corners of the tool from damaging the plasterboard paper.
