Cementite for mdf

Increasingly MDF is used in plasterboard renovations to create flush doors, walk-in closets and storage compartments.

But how to treat this material?

Can we treat it like plasterboard?

Of course yes!

The secret lies in the "cementite"!

Below we see what it is, how it works and how it is applied.

What is Cementite

"Cementite" is a base treatment to be applied to the MDF to make it paintable like plasterboard.

It appears as an opaque clinging agent with uniform characteristics and is frequently found white.

History and usefulness

"Cementite" appears in construction as a filler for wood, which uniforms the absorption of surface treatments or paints.

To date, it is also used as a cover for water infiltration stains or to remove halos.

How to prepare it

It is necessary to follow the indications given by the manufacturing companies.

Usually we proceed by diluting with odorless turpentine (50 ml of turpentine each liter of "Cementite") but in any case dilution with "Nitro" should be avoided.

Usually with 1 liter of cementite you can paint about 7-8 square meters of surface.

N.B: the "Cementite" must be diluted according to the material where it will be applied.

How to use and apply it

• Lay corrugated cardboard and cover sheets on the ground to protect the flooring;

• Wear protective gloves and a professional P1 type mask;

• Take a manual grinder and sandpaper with a grain suitable for smoothing the MDF;

• Rub vigorously in the direction of the wood grain;

• Apply the Cementite with the classic brushes or with sponge or satin hair rollers. N.B: the compressor can also be used for the application of Cementite. This operation is recommended only for work on large surfaces;

• Touch drying usually takes 5-7 hours, while deep drying can take up to a full day;

• Once the product has dried, proceed with the second coat of the same.

CAUTION:

Be careful in making the same number of brush strokes on both sides of the MDF. This is because if the panel absorbs more on one side than on another, the risk is that it can be distorted by losing its linearity.

Curiosity

There are two types of Cementite for sale and each has specific characteristics:

• Solvent-based cementite: produced with solvent-based resin and suitable for all the works indicated above.

• Water-based cementite: produced with acrylic resin, it essentially acts as a preparatory primer for wood. This Cementite does not have technical stain cover properties.

Did you know that...

The increased consumption of Cementite in construction works has led to the birth of several similar products formulated with water-based acrylic resins.

These products are easier to use and do not have an unpleasant smell. They are therefore suitable to be sold also in DIY stores.

On the other hand, however, they do not guarantee performance at the level of the original Cementite.
