Boiserie on plasterboard

History

Boiserie is a word that was used to indicate a decoration for walls with inlaid, worked and / or painted wooden panels.

The first examples are found in 17th century France where the boiserie often served as a frame for the paintings.

What is the boiserie today

After being abandoned for some time, this decorative technique seems to be back in fashion especially to enrich contemporary environments with a Shabby, Nordic or Industrial style.

Today the boiserie is presented as a complete covering of walls with panels in wood, metal and other materials, even hiding the entrance doors or with decorative strips made with more modern and performing materials such as plaster, stucco, polystyrene.

These decorations enrich the increasingly minimal and sometimes cold environments.

Materials for the boiserie

As mentioned above, there are several materials with which it is possible to make the boiserie.

Here are the most important:

• Wood: it is undoubtedly the oldest and most noble material with which to do this type of work but at the same time it is the most expensive and démodé. Usually the wood paneling is applied on the entire wall or up to a certain height. The panels are mostly worked by a carpenter.

• Ceramic plaster and stucco: created and elaborated by the "stucco factories", these materials replaced wood towards the end of the 1800s. They began to obtain the same results from an aesthetic point of view, however improving the workability aspect of the products that were made in modules. The lightness of the same allowed their application even where previously it was not possible.

• Polystyrene: with the rediscovery of the wainscoting in the last 20 years, these products have returned to production, taking advantage of new technologies and new products. One of the most popular materials is undoubtedly polystyrene. Light and easy to handle, the main factories of these products are located in Italy, especially in the Veneto region.

Installation of the boiserie

While in the case of wood and ceramic plaster paneling it is necessary to resort to a professional as it is a difficult process and somewhat delicate materials, as regards polystyrene, the assembly operation is much simpler.

The lightness and manageability of these products allow them to be handled with ease even by less experienced hands without the risk of damaging them or damaging the walls.

In fact, it will be sufficient to "arm" yourself with silicone and glue them to the wall after checking their linearity to avoid blemishes (for more information see our guide for mounting the boiserie).
