BIM: WHAT IS AND HOW IT WORKS

Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a model for optimizing the design, construction and management of buildings in the building and infrastructure sectors.

Through software, all relevant data of a building can be collected, combined and digitally linked into open and non-proprietary digital formats.

How does it work?

A BIM can contain any information regarding the building or its parts (the properties of the materials, components and systems of the technical elements, the phases of construction, maintenance operations, ....).

In this way the life cycle of the built work is studied and established by the initial design phase, passing through the construction phase, the maintenance phase and to conclude with the end-of-cycle disposal.

Reference laws

Ministerial Decree No. 560 of 01/12/2017 establishes the methods and timing for the progressive introduction of electronic modeling methods and tools for the construction and infrastructure (BIM Decree).

This new design system was introduced to improve and streamline processes that have hitherto negatively affected the times and methods of participation in the tenders themselves, bringing great benefits to public spending and to the quality of the real estate or infrastructure products that will result (at least one 10% savings during construction and throughout the entire work cycle).

Mandatory

The use of BIM will be mandatory starting from 01/01/2019 for works worth over 100 million euros, from 01/01/2020 for works over 50 million, from 01/01/2021 for works complexes over 15 million, from 01/01/2022 for works over 5.2 million, from 2023 for works over 1 million, from 2025 for all new works.
